The Lost Memory of the Loess Land
Yansheng WANG
Shanbei, China; circa 1920s. An ordinary family who have lived for many generations on the closed-off loess plateaus make their living through farming and shepherding. Ploughing in the spring, sowing in the summer, harvesting in fall, resting in the winter; their self- sufficient way of life is a microcosm of life in Northern China a century ago. The labor in song and verse; they cycle through joy and sorrow. In two or three short years, this ordinary family experiences major life events including the death of the grandfather, the marriage of the grandson, and the birth of the great-grandson. Through the progression of generations, they live according to the experience and customs left behind by their forefathers, living their own lives.
